Data Concentrator Unit

Overview

SmartDCU 910RA is a 19” rack mountable Data Concentrator Unit to be deployed as a part of the sub-station data acquisition system. The unit is specially engineered for the R-APDRP requirements by Government of India. The DCU collects data from feeder meters using MODBUS or IEC-62056 (DLMS) or a custom protocol over RS232/RS485/Zigbee. Analog data such as transformer oil temperature, winding temperature are acquired either in voltage or 4-20mA form by the analog data module. The Optically Isolated Potential free contacts of the Digital Inputs(DI)acquire the breaker ON/OFF Status. The Digital Outputs(DO) control the breakers and the required current is provided by the current drivers. Configuration such as changing meter type, configuring the same and setting the MODBUS slave addresses apart from other tasks is done over Ethernet via browser interface. The acquired data is stored in a common format and is sent to the remote monitoring station using GSM/GPRS/CDMA networks via appropriate Modem. The entire HMI and the MODBUS, DLMS(Optional) Software stack is built on Linux Operating system executing on the DCU.

.

Components

SmartDCU 910RA consists of eight slots housing the following cards:
CPU Card: This card hosts 64 MB RAM, 2 GB Non-volatile flash, Ethernet and a 400 MHz Processor.
Digital Output (DO) Card: Consists of 16 MOSFET switch based outputs. The total number of outputs available can be doubled by an add-on DO card.
Digital Input(DI) Card: Consists of 16 Optically Isolated, Potential Free Contacts for digital inputs. The total number of inputs available can be doubled by an add-on DI card.
Analog Channel Card: Consists of 8 analog channels that can take 4-20 mA inputs, the number of analog channels is doubled by adding an add-on Analog Channel card.

Add-on cards: The remaining three slots can be populated by 1x DI Add-on card, 1x DO Add-on card, 1x Analog Channel Add-on card respectively.

Microchip makes global smart meter interoperability easy with DLMS

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced that it partnered with Kalki Technologies to provide a Device Language Message Specification (DLMS) protocol stack

Microchip makes global smart meter interoperability easy with DLMS user association certified Stack for PIC® microcontrollers

World's first semiconductor company to offer DLMS stack customised for MCUs, enabling interoperability for broad range of energy types and communication protocols

Bangalore, July 20, 2011:  Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced that it partnered with Kalki Technologies to provide a Device Language Message Specification (DLMS) protocol stack that is optimised for 16-bit PIC® microcontrollers (MCUs).  The DLMS protocol has become the worldwide standard of choice among smart meter designers for interoperability among metering systems, including most energy types (electricity, gas, heat and water), multiple applications (residential, transmission and distribution)
, and numerous communication media (RS232, RS485, PSTN, GSM, GPRS, IPv4, PPP and PLC); as well as secure data access, via AES 128 encryption.

This software stack has been tested and verified by the DLMS User Association, and is customised to operate on all of Microchip's 16-bit PIC microcontrollers and dsPIC® Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs), making the DLMS certification process faster and easier. Additionally, the stack has been developed to ensure seamless integration with Microchip's communication protocol stacks, including TCP/IP, ZigBee® and PLC, covering a broad spectrum of smart energy applications.  Furthermore, this DLMS stack has been optimised to fit in a small memory footprint, enabling the use of the smallest, most cost-effective MCUs possible. For European applications, the stack provides support for the required IEC 62056-21 Mode E implementation.

The addition of this DLMS library to Microchip's smart energy offerings reinforces our continued focus on providing cost-effective and comprehensive solutions to our customers," said Mitch Obolsky, vice president of Microchip's Advanced Microcontroller Architecture Division. "Now, customers can leverage Microchip's vast portfolio of communication protocol solutions, such as TCP/IP, ZigBee and PLC, to create a fully integrated smart energy system."

Related development tools

Customers can use the Explorer 16 Development Board to design their DLMS solutions, based on Microchip's vast portfolio of industry-leading 16-bit MCUs and DSCs.  The Explorer 16 is available today, in the following configurations:

•   100-pin Explorer 16 Development Board (part # DM240001)
